Project Overview

After designing a logo for the FHS Music Program, the director asked me to create a logo for Club Cougar, their biggest fundraiser. Club Cougar is a vintage, swing themed jazz club featuring a live orchestra, dance numbers, vocalists and an unfolding drama story.

Visual Field

I looked at existing brand elements as well as in-period jazz club logos for inspiration. I noted the combination of sans-serifs with script typefaces, and the expressive layouts with minimal graphic elements.

Design Process

I typically go straight to digital sketches for logotypes to explore the unique relationships between a typeface’s letterforms. I honed in on the relationship between the ‘c’ and ‘o’ from the Cotton Club logo as the foundation for the Club Cougar logo.

Version 1

Further revisions brought me to my first client presentation. Their only feedback was to try a different font for the word ‘club.’

Finishing Touches

Drawing on my previous research, I switched ‘club’ to a script typeface, and adjusted the ligatures to match the curvature of the ‘C.’ I also saw the opportunity to reference vinyl records by extending the underlines around the ‘C.’
